Get peddling CitySocialisers

Cycling seems to be a hot topic at the moment, particularly in the UK’s cities as more people are looking for cheaper and environmentally friendly ways to get around.

With the London Mayoral Elections taking place this week, cycling is a key issue in the capital at the moment. After Boris Johnson partnered with Barclays in 2010 to launch cycle docks across Central London, he is now going after the bicycle-loving voters with the promise of more cycle lanes and improvements to safety.

The popularity of Pashley Cycles and the hype around Mark Cavendish in the upcoming Tour De France are also leading us to wonder if the whole of the UK are cycling obsessed! But If you’re yet to make the leap from public transport onto your bike and not sure if the roads of Briton are ready for you, we promise to have you converted by the end of this post with the top 10 reasons for getting on your bike.

1.    Don’t start off your day being squished on public transport:

We figured it’s the morning adrenaline rush that makes cyclists so happy. Whizz past traffic jams, rush to beat the big red bus, zip past cars – beats being crammed up in a rush hour tube with somebody’s chin on your shoulder and armpit in your face.

2.    Wind in your hair and a smile on your face:

Starting your day free as bird with the wind in your hair, music in the air and a smile on your face can be extremely therapeutic and instantly puts you in a good mood. It also gives you good thinking time – rather than shoving your face into a book in order to avoid eye contact with other travellers

3.    Stops global warming:

Cycling does wonders to Mother Earth. It helps to reduce your carbon footprint and with the recent hike in petrol prices and ridiculous queues at petrol stations, you don’t feel the pinch of any such hassles if you are a cyclist.

4.    Carry anything home:

Forget all the worries of having to buy groceries and lugging them home. Particularly the worry of the bags splitting and all your food escaping down the road! Cycling means you can pack away all your items in a classic pannier or simply tie items to the rack on the back of your bike. Just be careful you don’t topple over.

5. Save money

Commuting within your city can be expensive on public transport. Cycling into work or anywhere else is cost-effective with no parking, petrol, or insurance charges. And if you don’t want to invest in a bike, and your in London you could always rent a Boris Bike to get started.

6.    Late? Me, never!

Gone are those days where you had to rely on public transport and begin your morning cursing of the public transport officials and the frequency in your area. You can now depend on just yourself to get to your destination on time without any delays.

7.    Legs of steel

Forget the gym membership or your circuit training classes, biking everyday can get you fit this summer. So whether it’s legs of steel or some serious calorie burning you are after then cycling is the answer.

Studies show that cycling protects you against heart disease, stroke, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and some cancers, while supporting healthy bones, muscles, joints and even sleep patterns.

8.    Impress with your cycle skills

You can always stand apart from the crowd by being a cyclist. All your friends, family and colleagues will be impressed with your stamina and your bosses will be impressed by your dedication and passion. It’s always a good way to impress your fellow CitySocialisers too!

9. Explore your city

You may feel like you really don’t know much about your neighbourhood, let alone your entire city. Using the public transport means you miss some of the best undiscovered places like lovely pubs, green spaces you have never noticed, and new cafes and restaurants to try. If you are travelling underground, the only thing you get to see is black walls, sparks and lots of wires.

Being on a cycle gives you the flexibility to take off and see your city the way you want to see it. Stop for a photo of a scenic view or take your bike to one of the many cycle café’s popping up like Look Mum No Hands in London and Mud Dock in Bristol. You can grab a cup of coffee and get your bike serviced at the same time! Do you know any amazing spots in your city? Why not organise a cycle quest Social and share the joys with your local CitySocialisers.

10. Be a part of the cycle community and make new friends

Being a cyclist means you are instantly part of a strong community. To be a part of this community and make new friends all you have to have is the shared love for your bikes and determination to be a cyclist in the 21st century.

If you are a cyclist in your city let us know as we are constantly looking for Socials that are enjoyed by our wider group of CitySocialisers.  Simply let us know on Twitter or Facebook, if you fancy organising a cycle themed Social.

CitySocialising’s St Patrick’s Day Guide: How Are You Celebrating?

Category : CitySocialising HQ, Friendship Trends and News

GuinessBring on the Green & Guinness with St Patrick’s Day celebrations taking place across the country this weekend.

Wearing green, eating green food and even drinking green beer, is said to commemorate St Patrick’s use of the Shamrock – the plant associated with St Patrick and Ireland in general.

Though the biggest festivities take place in Ireland, St Patrick’s Day is also widely celebrated by Irish ex-pats around the world. It’s a great day to be out there and enjoy the parades, music, dancing and celebrations in the streets and pubs a traditional pint of Guinness in your hand.

In England, the places to watch out for the biggest celebrations are London, Manchester and Birmingham:

  • London turns St. Patrick’s Day in to at least a week of festivities, free performances and all kinds of Irish culture – from step dancing to rival Riverdance to the latest crop of Irish stand-up comedians. It all culminates in a Parade at Trafalgar Square and a Festival with singing, dancing and lots of food at Covent Garden and Leicester Square.
  • For those from Manchester, the Manchester Irish Festival is a two-week festival till Sunday 18th March 2012 across various venues. Make sure you don’t miss out on the Community Festival Market, Music Marquee, Bob Dylan & Clancy Brother’s tribute night and the famous St Patrick’s Day Parade.
  • And if you thought, Britain’s biggest parade is in London you are mistaken. Birmingham hosts the largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in Britain with a massive city centre parade over a two mile route through the city centre. A highlight of the Birmingham parade is the performance of the massed pipers. The organisers describe it as the third biggest parade in the world after Dublin and New York.

Rugby lovers are also going to have a fun weekend with England and Ireland facing each other in the Six Nations clash on Saturday. For our Birmingham CitySocialisers, we are heading to O’Neill’s for a Guinness, a bite to eat and watch the Rugby of course!  Check it out.

Guiness Pop CakesFor those who plan to spend their day indulging with more and more Guinness, here is an amazing recipe posted by Groupon UK on how to make Guinness Cake Pops. They are basically a wonderful mix of cake crumbs and butter-cream coated in chocolate and eaten on a stick. Since we are on the topic of food, The Guardian also has a great recipe on how to make traditional Irish apple cake in time for St Patrick’s Day. Let us know how you get on if you try either of them!

Here is a few CitySocialising St Patrick’s Day socials we have planned across the country:

If you fancy a guided walking tour and explore the Irish in London and celebrate the Irish of London through history, join us outside Charing Cross Station where the guided walking tour begins. Book your place.

All the party lovers in Brighton, how does the idea of 17 hours of partying and music sound? We are heading to the Fiddler’s Elbow for the best St Patrick’s Day event over a two day street party, the best Guinness in the South and big screens showing the 6 Nations games. Book your place.

And Newcastle, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Nottingham and Manchester CitySocialising will be celebrating St Patrick’s Day in your city at great city centre bars and restaurant venues. Join us in the entire fun taking place around the country!

CitySocialising Asks: Does Our Generation Still Believe in Friends Forever?

Category : CitySocialising HQ, Friendship Trends and News

This week our CitySocialising blog focusses on friendship. No, it’s not International Friendship Day yet, but a story that we read in the news this week about friendship has really got us thinking about what it means to our generation.

For those of you who haven’t heard about Annie Walsh and Ivy Turner  – they are two ladies, aged 99, who had been friends for almost a century – having gone to the same school, worked together, and even honeymooned together! Now the inseparable friends have sadly both died at 99, within few days apart of each other.

This made us really ponder over and debate if we still have such long-lasting bonds with people? Do we have that Annie or Ivy in our life who you could imagine doing everything under the sun with? Has our generation moved to think of friendship as a number, 500+ Facebook Friends and not as a relationship that is invaluable?

We asked our members on Twitter what they define as true friendship and this is what they had to say:

Armaan, in Manchester says “A true friend is someone who listens and critiques positively without being judgemental or harsh. Somebody who would accept you no matter of your deeds.”

Veronica, also in Manchester says “It is someone who is always there for you, no matter what. Someone who appreciates you and is not afraid to correct you.”

Dani, in London says “For me it is someone who will pick up the phone at 2:00am when you feel horrible and you fancy a drink and you know she will make it, that’s a good friend!”

Unfortunately, for a generation like ours who are burdened by stressful work, financial pressure and distraction from the online and technological world, it’s really hard for us to catch up with friends during the week and do fun things together.

Despite having the technology to do so, sustaining friendships and making sure that you are constantly in touch with your friends has never been so difficult. For some, it becomes even more difficult when you are in bustling cities and trying to build a social circle in a new place. It really is finding that perfect balance between work or other commitments and your social life.

No matter where in the world you are, you find your way around and eventually make great friends. It’s the way humans are designed, we are not meant to be alone!

It all starts with those awkward “Hi”s and “Hello”s to finally turn into a great story of a new friendship. Some of us won’t be able to share the closeness Annie & Ivy shared, but as long as we have that friend who can manage to put a smile on our face and take us away from our bubble, we have no complaints!

But hey, this is why CitySocialising is here to help you find your new family, your friends, your 2:00am phone buddy, your movie freak, your football mate or your cosmopolitan lover! We host amazing Socials around the year that suit your hobbies and interests. And, if you’re still not happy with the existing Socials and looking for people to accompany you on your next Ski Trip or Xbox night, you can organise your own too. It really is that easy to set up a Social on CitySocialising and it’s open to everyone, even our free members.

CitySocialising Take a Look at Leap Year around the UK

Category : CitySocialising HQ, Friendship Trends and News

Today at CitySocialising we are celebrating a special day – a day which comes only once in 4 years – the 29th February.

For some, today is an extra special day because they plan to propose to their loved ones or celebrate their birthday, and for the others it’s just another day. Those of you who haven’t planned anything, don’t stop yourself from going all out today, after all it’s a once in a 4 year opportunity!

29th February has always been a popular day for women to officially step outside of tradition and propose to their beaus.  So ladies, if you are in two minds about popping the question or not, don’t hesitate, and go for it! A recent study, according to Huffington Post, says almost half of British men would say yes if their other half proposed to them. And if you think you are alone, you’re mistaken as 10% of women in the UK are planning to propose on Leap Day this year.

If you still have the jitters, here’s a success story that should give you a boost. Bristol Leap Year Bride Lucy Thomas asked her partner Craig Thomas to marry her on this very same day 4 years ago, and they have never looked back since. Lucy claims she wasn’t nervous at all beforehand, and her advice for any women thinking of proposing to their partner this leap year is “If you know you really want it then go for it. I’ve got no regrets.”

For those women who want to take the plunge, London Aquarium is also offering women a quirky service along with a snorkel! Women can propose underwater with a personalised sign that pops the question, along with a guided tour of the fish.

For the ‘Leaplings’, those who are born on February 29th, it’s a much awaited birthday and the date is actually visible on their calendar. One of those Leaplings is John Hudson, technically the youngest pub landlord in UK, who is turning 12 today. Happy Birthday to everyone who is celebrating their birthday today!

On another note, we really liked this article based on the top 10 phenomenal leaps of all time in The Mirror.  And this something we wanted to share with you because we believe that if you have your eyes set on something or your gut tells you go get it – then don’t stop yourself. Take that leap!

For all our lovely members, CitySocialising have organised two great pub nights based around the Leap Day theme in Norman Bar, Leeds and Barcelona NQ Bar in Manchester. So come along after work and enjoy you free Leap Day drink on arrival!

Ps: Watch out for the Ladies who plan to go down on one knee!
